Sounds,  how are they made?

( Take a container of water, and have each child drop a penny into the container and explain to them how sound is like the waves made by the penny, the waves are like sound, they travel to the ear.)  The ideal thing is to use a TUNING FORK if you have one. Have each child strike the fork and place it into the water and watch the vibrate. This way the child feels and sees.

Tuning forks can be purchased for under $5.00 Click on the picture to go to the page that explains this whole activity to show children about sound.

Sounds are made by vibration. When something vibrates it creates waves that pass through the air to your ears.

Musical instruments make sounds by striking, blowing, plucking or by playing with a bow.

Some sounds are created naturally and others are created electronically.   Any object which vibrates will create a sound. The sound could be musical or it could be noisy; but regardless of its quality, the sound was created by a vibrating object.

Abour Musical notes and how they travel

Before your class starts take some wooden popsicle sticks and plastic garden hose washers, they can be rubber and hot glue them to the ends of the sticks. These are to be used to blow bubbles. If possible purchase some bubble making fluid or make your won with soap. The purpose of this exercise is to show children how music travels. It gives them an idea because the bubbles are round like the notes and travel through the air. Again this is part of the STS I developed.  If you like you can purchase bubble materials at a local dollar store. Have the children blow the bubbles slowly and then faster so they get a sense of how music is played slow and fast.  This can also be used for the lesson about Prophets.
