Over 37 Years of Development using something God showed in Exodus. Our senses.
Over the years I have studied how adults and children learn. Involved with and teaching major keyboard manufactures class lesson program's I have known for years that music deals with wellness. That seems to be all the craze today in the music industry. But it is nothing new.
God was certainly into sensory experiences when he communicated with His people. Lets take for example
Exodus 20:1-16.
And all the people perceived the thunder and the lighting flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance.
There is no doubt that God had something to say and there was going to be no excuse from the people that He hadn't wanted them. Note all the appeals to the senses in the preparation for and in the giving of the commandments.
We use in the STS the senses to help teach children.

SIGHT: A mountain they were not to touch, clean clothes, a thick cloud, smoke, fire, lightning, people trembling

SOUND: The blast from the ram's horn, A very loud trumpet sound, thunder, Moses speaking, the Lord speaking
SMELL: Freshly washed clothing, smoke

FEEL trembling, the violently quaking mountain
TASTE ( Perhaps)
We find today that it is no different. These wonderful, creative expressions are still being used as tools of Satan to mislead his followers and sometimes even the followers of Christ. That, however must never stop us from using these amazing gifts of creativity from God to praise Him as only His children can.
So we are creatures created by God with all these senses to learn. Just as in the Bible the Number Three is used as completion I decided to call my teaching method, STS.
All that you have to do is go back and read about David and the king to see just how music effects ones being...and that has been around for how long?
Learning involved many things including our senses. In recent years the term "phonics" has come to surface teaching children. Using this means is just a new term to something that teacher's have been using in music for years. I have put together in this program elements of Sight,Touch, and Sound in ways using colors, and numbers, along with certain elements in music to "Blend" them together in teaching children music.
JUST what is this STS thing? It is a special combination targeting our sensory experiences of using sight, touch and sound. This teaching technique I named simply STS. Sight,Touch,Sound.
Keep things simple.......Here in West Virginia life is somewhat as they would say "laid back". In the everyday hustle and bustle of life, things move so fast, fast food, fast relationships, people impatient to wait on anything, kids and adults alike want immediate results.
How it all began......
Every weekend I had the blessing of spending time at my grandmothers farm. She was a great cook and baker. She made homemade noodles that were unique in every way. She would kneed the dough over and over in her hands, just like she was putting her heart into the dough.
The sights and sounds, and touch of those days filled my heart with joy over the years and I will never forget them. Each of us, are unique, there are none of us alike. So each of us learn things in different ways. Some learn by doing, some by seeing, some by combinations of both. Well probably you are wondering what does baking and cooking have to do with music. Actually, nothing. But the example in how my grandmother, and my mother performed this task, and how they "Blended" together the ingredients made me think about music. So over the years I have taken notes on how different people, adults and children alike have learned music. You have heard the saying " He plays by heart" or He don't read music. Well as a concert artist for the Wurlitzer Company I often wondered why I was blessed to perform concerts in nearly every state when there were so many musicians so much more educated then I. A person came up to me one time and said " You play with heart". It never dawned to me, that anyone can study music, become a performer, but it takes someone to feel music from the most inner being that sets them apart from others. So I searched out my notes and put together what I have called STS.
I love to bake and cook, like my grandmother and my mother, the outcome of the final product you make, is not just what ingredients one uses or even the quality, it depends upon the temperature, the time, forming the final outcome will be combination of "ALL" the ingredients. Mom would say " just a pinch of this and a pinch of that".
STS is the right combination of sight, touch and sound, to teach children music with "HEART" not just musical notes. I don't have a college degree in music, I do hold a college degree in Biblical studies, but I know one thing that is certain.....like mom always said.....
" The proof is in the pudding" and God is the real author of music. So by this combination of 4 elements we blend them together into this unique teaching method.
The program is made up of Four parts which I call "time". Time is all around us, in the ticking of the clock, or the beat of ones heart, time, it can be seen, in the light of the day, and the darkness and still of the night. Life around us is filled with time, the rhythm of life. Speaking of rhythm the rhythmic quality of music stimulates and activates the lower part of the brain stem systems. The harmonies of music, and the rhythm of these harmonies at times has an emotional response within the body. The melody, and tone color bring direct responses as well as text and language in music from the neo-cortex. Music prepares the brain and body for connection.
In the Hands On time the children experience the feel,of crafting the instruments and how the materials come together to make music. They craft and create designs and colors on their instruments as well. So using both sight and touch, and sound.
Ear Training time the children again experience sight, touch and sound by hearing notes in relationship to the keyboard. In this element it is stressed to hear with the ear's. Basic music notation is introduced in this element.
"With every beat of ones heart, one keeps in time with the music of the soul" Dan Wheeler
In this what I call "Heart time" the children learn to hear music with the ears of the heart, about unity, and by doing this in an ensemble setting, using sight of not just notes, but pictures, colors, numbers, sounds, and touch in combinations that each selected group is using. Blending together both "ear and heart" into the hands on craft the children now incorporate these three elements.
Here is a simple example though the groups may vary depending upon the exercise that week uses.
Group A ( uses Sight) Group B ( Uses Touch) Both groups experience Sound together in the Ensemble or Unity time.
So please take your time, if you have any questions contact me. Pray about you taking on this ministry, let God lead you and your church. To God I give all the glory, honor, and praise for this program bears His name "Christ" . And to make a difference in just one child all the angels of heaven rejoice.
This program is made up of my 37 years teaching class lessons to children and adults. The program is a relaxed approach to teaching children music, using God's Word The standard, to help bring 'alive' music to the children. I developed a special way of teaching music. This program uses this technique. Sight, Touch, Sound.
