Biblical Bagpipes In biblical times the dulcimer or bagpipe contained a goatskin with two reed pipes.  In Daniel 3:10 in God's Word it mentions the dulcimer but unlike the hammered dulcimer of today it is believed to be different. In ancient times a stringed instrument like the dulcimer was also used, some called it a lute, but the idea of the ancient instrument is like more or less a cousin to the boxed hammered dulcimer of current day.

Biblical Cymbals Cymbals were used in Biblical times to praise the Lord. In the above sketch an Assyrian musician is shown playing a cymbal. The cymbal made a loud noise by clanging two brass bowls against each other making a rhythm. Cymbal players were often seen with a company of musicians during processions. The Psalmist said to praise him with the Loud cymbals. We know that there was different size cymbals, finger cymbals. The Mitzelet or double cymbal was used in temple worship in times of Christ. The Mitzelet is a handheld instrument that is somewhat shaped like a harp but has sets or pairs of small cymbals between two posts, which is struck with the hand like the tambourine or shaken.  The cymbals in ancient days were made from Brass.

The Mitzelet or double cymbal is made from a wooden cloths hanger and metal washers as the cymbals

Biblical Drums In ancient times certain drums were made from a clay jar, with a donkey skin stretched over the big open side. Some drums were made of wood with leather stretched over the open end. The timbrel or tambourine also had a skin stretched over it. The drums of biblical times were large but some were also used in special celebrations on parade. The Romans used marching drums in ancient Rome. They were used by the military and during times of festivals and special events. They also were used in combination with the other ancient musical instruments/

Biblical Dancers: dancing played an important part in ancient times. We know that the Bible says that David Danced.  It is a form of expression and I believe it is the music of the soul coming out. Mariam spoken of in the Bible danced with the women and played the Timbrels, Tambourines as she rejoiced. Herodias's own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests.  The King promised her a wish. And that wish was for John the Baptists head.

Biblical Flutes or Pipes In ancient times flutes or pipes were very popular and made of bone, reed, ivory or metal. The flute was the instrument of the Shepherd and was played for the sheep. David played the flute. Evidence of the pan flute also was used and the double flute in the biblical area. Carvings on walls, and etched in stone shows us of their use in biblical days.
