1 John 4:18 that "perfect love casts out fear". David/Fear Sunday School Lessons. The Nyon harp craft and lesson plans of this web site are copyrighted This lesson plan is for a 4 week session. This lesson like many others from our music program and vacation bible school programs can be used throughout the church year for individual lesson plans. Sign up today and create your own custom lessons from our programs. 'We used several of the lessons from the music and the VBS Hero Academy with our kids and they were excited about the crafts and lessons." " Our church used the harp craft and it was WONDERFUL!!"
Like many other parts of our programs you can take and create your own custom Sunday School programs around our materials. Below is a Lesson outline about David. The craft that we use is the Wooden Nylon line Cloths Line harp. We start with David from the beginning was 'choosen' and annointed. Then as most of those written in the Scriptures each one begins as a Shepherd. I like to use the Harp craft because our programs first are about teaching the Bible using Muisc. The shield of faith craft is from our Hero Academy VBS program. We write "Faith accross the shield. You also can also use the Armor of God [Shield of Faith] for this Lesson. I do not like to use the sword for children because they seem to relate it to killing, and violence in todays world of t.v. and video, movies, and games everywhere you look there is swords and guns, killing people, even if it is good fighting evil, I like to distance the training of children from items used in ancient times as the scriptures were written dealing with armor and weapons for adults not children... and when the armor is talked about in the Word children should understand that the Bible brings words of life not death> So we must be very carefull in how we instruct children. Though the Bible is the Sword yes I only like to stress FAITH and that children learn that GOD is their defender and the Shield of Faith can defeat all enemies. You can span the lesson outline out over a period of 3-4 weeks because of the craft. You can include the "Fear Toss" also shown below. This lesson plan can be used for several weeks, I recommend a month. This allows you time to do the crafts, and lessons about David.
LESSON OBJECTIVE [keywords:God/faith/respect/honor/armor/tools/ Teaching children to look at fear in the Biblical way not the way of the world. To replace fear with faith and not take on the spirit of fear. But before you do this the children must learn or understand what perfect love is. Perfect love is gentle and teachable, kind and easy to be entreated. It enters the school of Christ, as a pupil, not as a master, realizing how much is yet to be learned, rather than how much has been attained. Perfect love shows us our ignorance and begets the inextinguishable desire to disipate that darkness, and to enter the realm of real and reliable knowledge. If you find yourself growing wise above all your teachers, inclined to become dogmatic, to criticize your fellow disciples and set yourself up as a standard for the whole church, you have no little reason to fear that you are not controlled by the Spirit of God. Self-wisdom may easily assume the place of divine wisdom; and Satan may appear as an angel of light even in one who concerns himself with the most holy things. In no way are his ends more effectually secured than by inducing people to promote the subject of holiness by exceptional methods, and in an unteachable and arrogant spirit. John 13:34-35, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." After completing this lesson, the children will better understand the use of the word fear in the bible and the Biblical meaning as it relates to respecting and honoring God. God doesn't want us to be terrified of Him, but we are to respect and honor Him. To learn to 'turn' [trust God] fears into faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and the battles that we fight each day we must teach our children about the 'armor' of God. This is a 'real world' and the battle rages, and we must 'train' yes even our children about the tools that God gives us. In today's society even our churches are in a state of compromise. We all fall down, even DAVID, but he still respected and honored God. The comments below are for your use. I do not recommend that you keep it "simple on their level" to children. Simply Trust in God replace fear with faith" To fear God is to respect to have a spirit of fear leads to danger. This opens a door also for you to explain to older children about 'spirits'. Yes demons. You can modify any program to fit your own needs just remember FAITH and FEAR can not occupy the same area, so stress trust in God to turn their fears over to HIM and HIM alone. Fear is "an unpleasant and often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger."[1] Fear is completely natural and helps people to recognize and respond to dangerous situations and threats. However, healthy fear -- or fear which has a protective function -- can evolve into unhealthy or pathological fear, which can lead to exaggerated and violent behavior.People are social in nature, with shared values, religion, tradition, language, etc. Whenever the basic characteristics that tie a group together are threatened, the group will fear for its survival. As a result, the group will also attempt to get rid of the threat, sometimes through distorted or violent means.History plays an important role in this process. Historical experiences shape how groups view threats. If a group has been hurt or wounded in the past, it affects their outlook today. For example, historical tensions and wrongdoing affect the way Israelis and Palestinians see each other today. Oftentimes, history is exaggerated -- meaning one group is portrayed as extremely heroic and another group portrayed as barbarian or inhuman. This in turn leads to more mistreatment, as it is easier to abuse or hurt a group that has been dehumanized. A cycle develops--someone is hurt, resulting in fear and the demonization of the person or group that hurt them. This, in turn, makes it easier for future wrongdoing to occur. Fear tends to attract evil upon us, just as faith tends to attract the goodness and blessings of God. Fear is a substance of things we hope won't happen, its almost like a conviction that they will happen. Fear is faith in reverse. But it is faith in the devil, whether we know it or not. God wants Christians to be free of such fear. There is a fear which is good and clean, which is the fear of the Lord. Many blessings are associated with the healthy fear of the Lord. We are not talking about that kind of fear here. Neither are we talking about the natural healthy fear which would affect us if for example we were to contemplate jumping off a cliff or walking into heavy speeding traffic. We are talking about tormenting fear. This fear is strictly of the devil. Fear is faith in Reverse The Bible has quite a bit to say about fear. In fact it mentions two specific types of fear. The first type is beneficial and is to be encouraged. The second type is a detriment and is to be not only discouraged, but overcome. The first type of fear is fear of the Lord. This type of fear is not necessarily fear that means to be afraid of something. Rather it is a reverential awe of God; a reverence for His power and glory. However, it is also proper respect for His wrath and anger. In other words, it is a total acknowledgement of all that God is which comes through knowing Him and all His attributes. For I am a great king, says the LORD Almighty, and my name is to be feared among the nations. Malachi 1:14 Materials need: You will need wooden cloths hangers, eye screws, fishing line, small wooden craft balls, and paint. I use Q-tips for the children to paint their harps. There are three strings on the harp. They should be tuned to C_E_G which I also use to incorporate the message about the Holy Spirit or Trinity. You can can also tune the strings to other letters like D for David, or F for Fear and Faith, G for God. Do not be in a hurry to finish this craft. Let the children paint and decorate their harps on the first week. String the harp on the Second week. Tune the harps on the third week. Play them on the forth week. It is great to have a little program during your church time and have the children show off their project and play along with perhaps one of your church staff musicians. The Shield of Faith: You can purchase shields already cut from Oriental treasure very reasonable, but I simply use cardboard boxes and spray paint the shields black. You must pre-cut them before your class. I also use brass paper ties and a hole punch to put through the shield to give them a authentic rivit, type look. The shield is used for the 'fear' toss. You can do a lesson on David and the Giant, about how his "faith" overcomed his fear. As in all our crafts and projects we use Bible Color's. I suggust that you use ribbon and tie them on the bottom of the shields. Explain about the meaning of the colors, of the ribbons you are using. Preparation: You must drill the holes in the wooden cloths hangers before your class. Use a small bit. There are many men in your congregation that can drill them for you.
Have the children talk about fear. What they fear most? In our youth program the Circle of life we have found that the youth want to write down their fears each week as we throw them into the fire which represent God consuming their fears and replacing them with faith. If your church has a youth program visit the web site of the kids. Circle of Life Youth Program Website
